Are You a Good Candidate for Botox?

    Last updated 4 months ago

Botox injections have become an increasingly popular skin care procedure because they effectively smooth facial lines that develop between the eyebrows and at the edge of the eyes. Typically, Botox treatment only takes 10 minutes, creating noticeable aesthetic results in the next few days. The Food and Drug Administration has approved Botox injections for people between the ages of 18 and 65.

A typical Botox appointment only involves a few small injections during the 10-minute session. For this reason, a very large number of people interested in Botox discover that they are good candidates for treatment. There are a variety of medical reasons to seek Botox injections, but people most commonly schedule an appointment to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles that come with aging. Although the FDA approves the use of Botox for people ages 18 to 65, the best way for someone to find out if he or she is a good Botox candidate is by speaking with an experienced dermatologist.

How to Spot a Suspicious Mole

    Last updated 4 months ago

Between 40% and 50% of fair-skinned people who live to the age of 65 will develop some form of skin cancer. Most skin cancers start out as irregular spots, so it’s important to check your skin every few months for any irregularities. The sooner you detect early skin cancer warning signs, including new growths or precancerous lesions, the better your chances of seeking effective skin cancer treatment.

    Normal mole
Most moles are harmless spots that develop either in childhood or later in life. Most moles are smaller than the size of a pencil eraser, symmetrical in appearance, and evenly colored throughout. Normal moles are typically round in appearance and don’t change this circular shape over time. Normal moles can develop in any area of your body, so it’s important to regularly check your existing moles for any changes in size or shape.

    Basal cell carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma typically develops on the face in response to sun damage. Luckily, it’s easily treatable if caught early. Basal cell carcinoma looks different than normal moles because it appears as a pinkish or reddish skin patch. Sometimes it even bleeds and scabs. If you develop basal cell carcinoma, you may initially mistake it for a pimple that seems to heal on its own. However, this kind of cancerous spot will return again once healing.

Though melanoma is an incredibly serious and quickly spreading form of skin cancer, it is treatable when caught early. Melanoma commonly develops on women’s legs instead of their faces. In men, it is more commonly seen on the torso. If you see a dark, oddly shaped skin growth that is black or reddish-brown in coloring, you should immediately schedule an appointment with your dermatologist.

    Common Melasma Triggers

Do you suffer from melasma? This cosmetic problem can afflict both men and women, though the latter group experiences on a much greater scale. A likely reason why this condition is so prevalent in women is because it can develop during pregnancy. Dermatologists believe this happens due to hormonal fluctuations that cause more pigment to be made in the skin, leading to those dark marks that can speckle the cheeks, forehead, and chin area. Regardless of gender, however, melasma can occur when people spend time in the sun. While some people may experience an even change of skin color, others may suffer the blotchy patches of melasma on their face and upper body. To avoid putting yourself at a higher risk for this condition, limit your time outdoors and wear sunscreen when in the sun.

Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia offers treatment options to alleviate the appearance of melasma. To schedule a consultation with a dermatologist, call our Centreville location at (571) 748-5436 or Sterling location at (703) 596-0203.
